Gabe Newell has his cake and eats it!

Gabe Newell received the  Pioneer Award at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco today for his outstanding work with Valve’s games and the Steam distribution system including works such as Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and Portal.

The award isn’t easily given away and requires some fundamentally radical concepts to be pushed for it to be considered. On January 15th this year Gamasutra announced his winning of this prestigious title and today is when it is occurred (Time zones allowing :) ).

Gabe had previously worked for Microsoft and earned enough money during his 13 year tenure to start producing games and eventually a method of delivery which has revolutionised the online gaming world.

In keeping with previous titles Valve has recently started an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) which is promoting Portal 2, a Macintosh version of Steam and possibly the long awaiting game Half-Life 3 too.

With augmented reality finding its way to mobile phones and hardware closing the gap between home computing and game playing on the go (such as the recent Street Fighter 4 game on the iPhone) it will undoubtedly be soon that Steam will find its way onto the mobile circuit and an international standard (perhaps community) of game players will be known everywhere.

Unusual for a volunteering organisation to talk about? – Sure

The paved road for a more standardised online world and potential for establishing bridges between different cultures in a seamless fashion? – Almost definitely.
